A Study on the Effect of Supportive Touch and Information on the State Anxiety of Hospitalized


Abstract
The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of supportive touch and information by nurse purpose on hospitalized patients. Quasi-experimental study attempted to establish. the purpose.
The subjects of this study comprised 60 hospitalized patients selected from the internal medicine ward and orthopedic surgery ward of H. University hospital during the period from June 1, 1987 to July 30, 1987.
A sample of hospitalized patients was the subject fell within the range of selection and then the subjects classified by a random sampling method into an internal medicine group and an orthopedic surgery group.
The instrument used for this study was the state-anxiety inventory developed by spielberger and activity change scale developed by Kim Myung Ja.
Subjects were administered these instrument pre and post intervention subject, both group received an individual intervention by supportive touch and information.
Data analysis was done by use of the t-Test, Pearson Correlation Coefficient, ANOVA and X2-test.
The result of this study was as follows:
1. The first hypothesis: There will be a difference in state anxiety between internal medicine group and orthopedic surgery group given by supportive touch and information was supported (t = -2.49, P = O.016).
2. The Second bypothesis : There will be a difference in state anxiety between internal medicine patient group and orthopedic surgery group given by supportive touch and information was supported (t = 4.42, P = 0.000).
2. A correlation did exist between state anxiety of post and activity change of post was supported (r = 0.3670, P = 0.002).
It can be concluded that supportive touch and information is an effective way of relieving the anxiety of hospitalized patients.
